Show and Tell: Hilarious Letter

What can multilingual translators do? This, which I have appended to this blog post is a mail written to a e-mail pal by me. It is stupid. I wrote some text and just for fun had it translated into German by a translator on my PC. After that, I had that text, re-translated back into English. The output was so funny that I have kept it on for almost six-seven years!

Howdy R, I do not learn took Tibetan, however german as a choice of the subject in optional. I am does not carry certain if soybean of planting India is not virtual defense mechanism or, whether George shrub of pink boxer, but I am would really bet will regard shrub each customs of the joker, he. While far as goes during PhD, PhD stands pottery cliffs day. The other execution, that I have dries was belonged main hand, that sees, leaving the last the procedure of naturally, that the hand dries, without the hindrance of towels or one such obtrusive medium in the union droplets of the water with the air around the hand. The procedure is initiated by strongly shaking the hand and that then expansion of the palm and the increase of your hand and leaving that it remains there, is dry until each pore.

what!!?!??

Tell you a funny story - apparently someone in Wales wanted a new road sign to be translated into Welsh and emailed the translator to translate it and they simply put the message they got back from the translator on the sign, little realising that all they had was the out-of-office message!!! ha ha - link for that one is here...http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7702913.stm

Whew - Where am I? For a moment I was transported back to my World Linguistics class from 1998!

Language totally intruiges me. This is amazing as you only went from A to B and back to A!

(it scares me a little as I am an ASL Interpreter...smile)

Computers aren't the only source of error. I remember my high school French teacher telling us about one of her students who had stumped her when instead of the past tense of the verb 'to feel' (as in 'I felt') he looked up 'felt' in the English-French dictionary and came up with the word for the fabric kind of felt. It made so little sense that even as a native French speaker it took her a long time to figure out what he meant.

Now you have me curious about what your original message said... I really have no idea! :)

Love it :) When I was taking French in college, my husband always got a kick out of having me type something in French and translating it back... Ahh, the horror.
